Back up without crashing | Network World

As more servers are virtualized, backing up and protecting them becomes more of a problem. It's not enough for IT to back up each virtual server and its data. Protection is needed for the virtual server's image -- its OS, configuration and settings -- and the metadata on the physical server that identifies the virtual server's relationship to networked storage. The challenge is to choose the right virtual server backup option:

Data Domain releases DD120 for backup and deduplication | Network World

Deduplication vendor Data Domain last week extended its appliances into the low-end of the market by introducing a system for use in remote or branch offices. The DD120 is an alternative for businesses who would normally put a tape autoloader in the hands of an inexperienced or over-taxed administrator.

NetFlash: Bring on the wireless apps | Network World

Users had a clear focus at last week's WiMAX World conference: They wanted to know more about cost-effective, reliable, licensed wireless broadband for applications such as backhaul, access to wireline network services and data backup/recovery. NetPro tools support Active Directory backup and restore, extends audit collection | Network World

Last week, I promised to tell you about the new offerings from NetPro, and all of them (there are three) are worth paying attention to. Just released were: Version 2 of NetPro AccessManager, which enables role-based management support and workflow processing of approved changes and roles; Version 3.5 of NetPro RestoreADmin, for online Active Directory backup and restore; and the brand new NetPro ReportADmin for Microsoft's Audit Collection Services (ACS), which extends ACS with consolidated views, simplifi

A New Backup Option | Network World

Forgive me, but I haven't nagged you about backups in months. Remember how you promised yourself this year would be different? You included "regular data backups" in your New Year's Resolutions. You asked others to help you back up. You tore a backup software comparison out of a magazine. But, alas, your files languish in their typical, precarious, unbacked-up state.

Is your service provider a carrier? | Network World

Not so many years ago, there was essentially no difference between a WAN "carrier" and a WAN "service provider." In fact, the terms were often used interchangeably. Of course, we've had years of bandwidth wholesaling. All the way back to the days of T-1/E-1 networks, we were advising customers to make sure that backup or redundant circuits from two "carriers," such as MCI and AT&T, were truly on different facilities so that if a fiber cut occurred, the backup facility would function as a backup. Further, t

Users unfazed by Symantec’s $1B tax bill | Network World

Users say they're not overly concerned with the almost $1 billion tax bill Symantec was slapped with after acquiring storage software vendor Veritas Software last year. But at least one analyst said it could affect spending at the company, as well as what users will choose for backup software in the future.

Cisco kicks off IOS Patch Wednesday | Network World

Cisco kicked off its bi-annual IOS Patch Wednesday with five new fixes for its venerable router operating system. Most of the patched flaws were of the denial-of-service variety. Mozilla came out with 10 new fixes for Firefox as well. Users should already be getting Version 2.0.13 as part of Firefox's automated patch system. Also today, attackers are going after flaws in Excel, CA's BrightStor backup system and possibly D-Link routers.

Flummoxed by lessons | Network World

This cautionary tale about the need to keep track of key suppliers comes from reader Mike in Arizona. Mike uses the Iomega REV 35 cartridges for backup, the same ones I discussed back in October. The cartridges hold 35 gigabytes (more than double that with compression) and read and write faster than tapes, so I believe they provide a good back-up option. Mike said they do a great job for him and have for over 18 months.

NetFlash: Backup grows up | Network World

Backup grows up Compared to hot areas like security or wireless, data backup and restore may have seemed like IT's forgotten child - until now. A perfect storm of disappearing back-up windows (thanks to enormous data growth and nonstop business operations), large-scale catastrophes, increased litigation requiring electronic data discovery and federal regulations governing data retention, has catapulted backup and recovery to IT's head table. http://www.networkworld.com/research/2005/051605-backup.html?net

IMCD Business Backup: Prepare for all ContingenZ’s | Network World

Some years ago, I wrote about my friends and colleagues Michael Miora and Stephen Cobb's incident management planning and training program, then called IMCD. Now Michael and Stephen Cobb's brother, Michael Cobb, have updated the product and reduced the price all the way down to $99 per copy (10% of the original price). They have renamed this new version 3 as "IMCD Business Backup" to make it clearer that the software is an actual preparation and recovery tool, not just a planning tool.

Symantec-Veritas and Microsoft go head-to-head in the back-up market | Network World

For many years, the name "Veritas" has been almost synonymous with backup and archiving. Veritas' Backup Exec is used in a large proportion of Windows networking sites as an integral part of their disaster recovery plans as well as their archival/audit systems. Microsoft has generally stayed out of the archival business, developing instead technologies that partners, including Veritas, could exploit in order to enhance the value of Windows networks. But a recent release from Symantec (Veritas' owner) calle

Can you trust data-recovery service providers? | Network World

Data-recovery service providers are supposed to be saving important data for you when something goes wrong -- a drive crashes or storage device is dropped, and no backup is available. But do you trust them with the important data you let them recover or could they actually be a source for a data breach?
